Benefits: money you're already entitled to
This is the only income source on this list that requires zero working hours: money you're already entitled to but never claimed. In most countries, large groups of households leave benefits unclaimed — usually because they assume they don't qualify.
Where to look
- Housing support — renting on a modest income often qualifies for monthly support.
- Healthcare subsidies — income thresholds are often higher than people think.
- Child benefits and supplements — especially for single parents.
- Childcare support — covers a large share of costs if you work or study.
Checked in 10 minutes
Every country has an official benefits calculator (in the Netherlands: belastingdienst.nl/toeslagen; in the UK: gov.uk benefits calculators). Fill in your income and housing situation anonymously and see what you're entitled to. Claims can often be backdated — money from this year may still be recoverable.
One honest warning
Report changes (higher income, moving in together) immediately. Overpaid benefits must be paid back, and you want to stay ahead of that. When in doubt, set the benefit slightly lower — a top-up later beats a repayment letter.
