Three types of percentage calculations

What is X% of Y? — The most common calculation. You have a number and want to find a percentage of it. Example: what is 15% of 200? Answer: 30. Use this for discounts, tips, tax amounts, or any time you need a fraction of a number.

X is what % of Y? — You have two numbers and want to know what percentage one is of the other. Example: 45 is what percent of 180? Answer: 25%. Use this to understand proportions, conversion rates, or how much of a budget has been spent.

Percentage change — You have an old value and a new value and want to know the percentage increase or decrease. Example: from 80 to 100 is a +25% change. From 100 to 80 is a -20% change. Note these are not the same — percentage change depends on the starting point.
